Presentations by international speakers Dr Walter Riess (IBM) and Mr Brandon Van Leer (FEI) will explore the current and future nanotechnology landscape and discuss nanofabrication techniques and tools. Dr Reiss has extensive experience in LED displays\, nanoscale structures and devices\, advanced thermal packaging optics\, silicon photonics\, self assembly and patterning\, experimental biology and molecular electronics. Dr Riess will give a broad overview of global nanofabrication trends and discuss the future of nanotechnology and emerging technologies. \n  \n \nBrandon Van Leer is the Business Development and Product Marketing Engineer for FEI. DESCRIPTION:The Melbourne Centre for Nanofabrication together with ANFF Design House is happy to announce that Tanner EDA/Mentor will be visiting MCN to present an L-Edit workshop. The two-day L-Edit hands-on workshop shows you how to use UPI and T-Cells\, advanced capabilities that allow you to automate simple layout tasks\, create parameterized layout generators (usefulfor creating spatial variation in mask design or for etch characterization/compensation) and perform special analyses. Thew two-day UPI and T-Cells course is divided between presentation and hands- on training exercises. \nCourse content includes: \n\nAdvanced C Review – Arrays\, Pointers\, Memory Allocations\, and C Preprocessor\nCreating Precompiled Macros\nCreating Compiled Macros\nDebugging UPI Macros\nUPI Specific Topics:\n\nUPI Data types\nBinding Macros to Hot Keys and Menus\nCreating multiple macros in one file\nGetting User Input (using the UPI Dialogs)\nTraversing object/cell/layer lists\nWorking with Technology Information\n\n\nL-Comp – Layout composition functions\nUPI & T-Cells Advanced Topics\n\nAttendees require only a rudimentary understanding of L-Edit to participate in this workshop. SUMMARY:A practical approach to Reactive Ion Etching presented by Dr Fouad Karouta
DESCRIPTION:Abstract\nAfter a short introduction of the Australian National Fabrication Facility ACT Node and its capabilities\, this talk will focus on general aspects of reactive ion etching (RIE) technique will be described such as anisotropy\, loading effect\, lag effect\, RIE chemistries and micro-masking followed by a brief overview of etching dielectrics (SiOx\, SiNx) and crystalline Si. The second part of the paper is dedicated to etching III-V compound semiconductors where\, based on RIE results of GaN material\, a simple and practical thermodynamic approach is exposed explaining the criteria as to how to select the best chemistry for etching a specific material and to explain the GaN etching results. Finally\, a comprehensive study of etching InP-based materials using various chemistries will be discussed as well their various photonic applications. \nReference: http://iopscience.iop.org/0022-3727/47/23/233501/ \nAbout the speaker\nFouad Karouta has a chemistry degree from Lebanese University in Beirut\, accomplished in 1986 his PhD in Montpellier University (France) on epitaxy and LEDs of InGaAsSb structures. He joined Eindhoven University of Technology in The Netherlands at the Opto-electronic Devices Section of the Department of Electrical Engineering\, as assistant professor (1987) and associate professor (2000) till early 2009 before joining ANU as the ANFF ACT Node Manager. Fouad has vast experience in managing research facilities and has been involved with research in III-V compound semiconductors (GaAs\, InP\, GaN) for optoelectronic and microelectronic applications for more than 30 years and has published and co-authored a large number of papers on the subject.

SUMMARY:Diamond on demand grand opening
DESCRIPTION:You are invited to the grand opening of the Melbourne Centre for Nanofabrication’s Diamond Deposition Suite. The most advanced of its kind in Australia\, the suite provides the unique ability to grow ultra high purity diamond\, as well as semi-conducting diamond. Use of thin diamond films is a burgeoning research field\, with Australian investigators leading the way in the use of diamond for bionic eye implantable devices. \nThe MCN suite will also extend R&D capabilities for our industry partners in biosensor research\, as well as in electronics\, quantum information processing and manufacturing applications. Our panel of diamond experts includes Bionic Vision Australia’s Professor Steven Prawer\, ARC Laureate Fellow and quantum information specialist\, Professor Lloyd Hollenberg\, and diamond savant\, Dr Alastair Stacey. Dr. Alastair Stacey will showcase the industrial applications of diamond as well as highlight Australia’s place on the world research stage and some of the future applications of diamond.  Prof. Steven Prawer will highlight the work undertaken on the Bionic eye project and the unique ways in which diamond has the development of implantable bionics. \nProf. Lloyd Hollenberg will discuss how researchers are exploiting the quantum properties of diamond for new sensing technologies in nanoscale biology. Included in these technologies are nano-scopic magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and high resolution neuronal imaging.  The seminar will conclude with an official opening of the Diamond Deposition Suite.
