In March 2015, Guangyuan moved from Northeastern University at Qinhuangdao, where he had worked as a Lecturer and Associate Professor, to join RMIT as a research fellow.
His personal research interests include three-dimensional metamaterials and photonic crystals and integrated system designs, integrated optics, nano-imaging technology and nanophotonic devices. Since joining MCN in October 2016, Guangyuan is primarily operating the facility’s focused ion beam instrument, scanning electron microscopes, and electron-beam lithography systems.
Dr. Yang Lim

At MCN, Yang supports thin film deposition via e-beam evaporation, direct-write photolithography, ball and wedge wire bonders, and dicing saw. Yang’s thesis research area was the development, characterisation and gas plasma functionalisation of SU-8 microcantilever aptasensor for disease detection. She is interested in MEMs devices, biosensors and microfludics.
Yang can regularly be seen at the best dining spots around Melbourne and is her colleague’s go-to for restaurant recommendations. In a happy fusion of her work and hobbies, she has extended her design and experimentation skills from the cleanroom to the kitchen, with delicious results.
Dr. Ricky Tjeung

Prior to pursuing his doctoral degree in Australia, Ricky gained experienced at NTU, Singapore Institute of Manufacturing Technology - A*STAR and Avago Technologies. His past responsibilities ranged from development and performance characterisation of novel micro devices, to maintenance and optimisation of a manufacturing production line.
Ricky brings considerable microfabrication and characterisation expertises to the MCN. He is responsible for photolithography, physical vapour deposition, chemical vapor deposition and reactive ion etching processes. He is particularly interested in the areas of MEMS, micro actuators, microfluidics, thin film technology and heat management.
If Ricky were to have a super-power, he’d want it to be invisibility so that he could fall completely off the radar on weekends and indulge his passion for reading and seeing the latest movies. It would also come in handy for another favourite pasttime - playing badminton. We can see the movie posters already - “you won’t believe where he strikes from next!”

Prior to join in MCN in March 2013, John worked as a Sales Manager for Coherent Scientific Pty. Ltd. and was responsible for sales, marketing, installation and training for Nikon microscopes, including laser-based microscopes. John brings to MCN a lot of experience in customer service, having spent many years working in this field in both local and international companies.
He also brings significant technical expertise, and since 2004, he has installed more than 20 Nikon Confocal systems in Victoria including the A1 system at MCN.
John specialises in optical microscopy with digital imaging, confocal microscopes, Nikon NIS Elements software and new generation, super resolution systems.
John is responsible for managing the optical microscopy laboratory at MCN. His other main responsibility as MCN Client Service Manager is to look after MCN’s clientele, assist with customer queries and conduct the MCN General Inductions for new and existing clients.
John holds a PhD in Physics (majoring optics and lasers) from Macquarie University.
His secret superhero power is his ability to enjoy swimming every morning, whatever the weather, and he hopes that by the end of the year, he’ll have swum the equivalent of Melbourne to Tasmania – 340km!

Dr. Hemayet Uddin

Hemayet holds a 1st class BSc (Hons) and MSc in Chemistry from Chittagong University, Bangladesh. He completed his PhD in Chemical Engineering and Materials Science in 2003 from Yokohama National University (YNU). He undertook three postdoctoral terms from 2003 to 2008 at the Ajinomoto Co. Inc., YNU and Tohoku University, Japan, where he studied in broad areas of Colloid, Surface and Biophysical Sciences including development of viscoelastic formulations, resonance shear forces of confined micellar solutions and peptide-biomembrane interactions.
Hemayet moved to Melbourne from Japan in early 2008 and joined as a Research Fellow at the University of Melbourne. Prior to joining MCN in December 2012 as a process engineer, he completed a number of research projects including hydrodynamic forces of superhydrophobic surfaces, formation and characterisation of nanobubbles and nanodroplets, and nanomechanical properties of cells and tissues.
Hemayet brings considerable AFM and other surface/nanomaterials characterisation expertise to the MCN. He is responsible for the Cleanroom AFM, BioAFM, Optical Profilometer, 3D Printer, UV-Vis Spectrophotometer, Malvern Zetasizer, Electrokinetic Analyser, Nanoprint Microarrayer and PDMS Soft Lithography facilities.
Hemayet lives for cricket season, proudly barracking for his home state of Bangladesh. In the off-season he plays softball cricket and gardens with his kids.
Mr. Dan Smith

Dan joined MCN in May 2013, bringing over 25 years of experience in micro/nanofabrication, MEMS and semiconductor manufacturing, process development, process integration, process characterisation, equipment operation and maintenance. Dan’s role is a secondment from the University of Melbourne and he is based at the MCN primarily to support users from the University of Melbourne, though he is also available to all users, both academic and from industry. Dan is available to support MCN users with any aspect of their project, including experimental design, equipment training or support, process development or characterisation.
Dan gained his experience at the University of Illinois startup company, Electronic Decisions Incorporated where he was introduced to semiconductor processes fabricating acoustic charge transport devices on GaAs substrates. Dan moved to Hewlett Packard in Corvallis, Oregon in 1995. At HP’s Technology Development Organisation, Dan specialised in Silicon and novel thin film material dry etch process development, manufacturing and process sustaining. Besides dry etch, Dan also brings his experience in photolithography, wet etch, thin film deposition and metrology.
On the weekends you are likely to find Dan happily renovating his house. Don’t be fooled - he’s day dreaming about jumping the fence to go golfing, riding and hiking.
Dr. Abu Sadek

In the final year of his doctoral work, Abu was appointed as a Research Fellow in the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering. During this time he developed thin film deposition and anodisation methodologies for the fabrication of nano-porous/tubular semiconducting metal oxide films for solar cell applications. He completed postdoctoral work between 2009 and 2012 in the development of next generation high performance devices using graphene and carbon nanotubes.
Prior to joining MCN in October 2014, he was an Alfred Deakin Postdoc at the Institute for Frontier Materials at Deakin University where he worked on plasma-based nanofabrication, polymerisation, doping and functionalisation of materials.
Abu comes to the MCN with extensive experience in a variety of microfabrication techniques including: cleanroom processing, photolithography, wet/dry etching, plasma systems engineering, SAW based gas sensors development, thin films deposition and electronic characterisation.
In his free time, Abu cultivates his remarkable sense of zen by fishing in Port Phillip Bay.

Sean was appointed as the General Manager for the Melbourne Centre for Nanofabrication and the Victorian Node of the Australian National Fabrication Facility (ANFF-VIC) in May 2017. He was previously a Senior Process Engineer at MCN.
Sean completed his Bachelors degrees in Chemical Engineering and Environmental Engineering from the University of Colorado at Boulder in 2005. He also holds a masters (2007) and a PhD (2010) in Chemical Engineering from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.
During his graduate studies, he focused mainly on novel applications of acoustics for pumping in microfluidic systems and methods for modular microfluidic assembly. Sean came to Melbourne in early 2011 as a postdoctoral fellow in the MicroNanophysics Research Laboratory (MNRL) under Professors James Friend (UCSD) and Leslie Yeo (RMIT), where he worked to develop surface acoustic wave actuators for a variety of microfluidic applications.
In his spare time, you will find Sean using his skills in precision engineering for far more romantic endevours - making and playing classical guitars.

Bernie has a multidisciplinary background in materials science and engineering (BSc - Purdue University), business administration (MBA - Arizona State University), and management.
At MCN, Bernie oversees technical engineering teams, laboratory operations, and equipment performance to deliver high-quality fabrication and consultation services. His teams support industry and academic clients in application-oriented research, prototype development, and small-volume production. He also ensures regulatory compliance within MCN’s ISO-certified environment and drives cost optimisation and continuous improvement using Lean Manufacturing principles.
Bernie leads MCN’s Analytics/AI initiatives, chairing the MCN Analytics/AI Working Group to optimise operations and implement AI & Advanced Analytics. The group focuses on enhancing data literacy, improving client services, ensuring ethical AI use, and advancing applications within MCN.
Before MCN, Bernie spent 17 years at Intel Corporation in semiconductor fabrication, specialising in process development, characterisation, advanced data analytics, technology startups, business operations, and cost reduction.
Hailing from Phoenix, Arizona, Bernie enjoys exploring the unique sites of Australia with his family. A passionate sports fan, he has embraced AFL and holds his own in the office footy tipping competition.
